An example of a case we had here at Aequitas was where a client was employed as a “dropper” in a food production warehouse. Their duties involved collecting sauce from a pan into a plastic bag, sealing the bag and placing the bag in a tumbler for cooling.
The sauce was extremely hot, having been heated to 90 – 95 degrees in the pan. At the time of the claimant’s accident, the company he worked for had work equipment set up in such a way that the pan and the tumbler were above head height. This resulted in collecting sauce from the pan into the plastic bag and then into tumbler involving the claimant reaching and working above head height.
One day our client had done his normal routine of collecting the bag of sauce closing and sealing and when he went to place bag in the tumbler, the bag burst and the hot sauce split onto his face and neck causing horrific painful burns.
The client was only 19 at the time of the accident and at such a young tender age with facial scarring and pigmentation it left him feeling very self-conscious and insecure.
Every year people are killed or seriously injured in burn accidents at work. One simple mistake can result in life-changing burns or worse, but one simple step from a company ensuring that all health and safety procedures are in place can save you.
The key element of a safe workplace for employees is the maintenance of equipment and the surrounding areas of a manufacturing floor. Burns are common types of accidents especially in a food processing factory.
If you’ve been unlucky enough to be involved in an accident where you have suffered burns, aside from your legal solution, there are various steps you can take to get your life back to some sort of normality. One thing that is highly recommended is seeing more than one specialist to assist in your recovery. You may need to visit a specialist physio to deal with the physical pain, a plastic surgeon to help repair your skin or even a psychologist to deal with emotional issues just to name a few. This obviously could cost a lot of money and, you should speak with one of our experienced solicitors about including these costs as part of your damages in a personal injury claim.
