Tattoo Claims

Tattoo claims often result from people not being asked the proper questions before committing to the ink.

If you are looking to get your first tattoo make sure that your tattooist has asked you the following:

  • The tattooist should ask you a list of medical questions before starting on your tattoo.
  • They should have a health and safety certificate displayed visibly for everyone to see.
  • Your tattoo artist should inform you of the appropriate aftercare and advice before your inking session and after you have your tattoo.
  • You shall be asked if you have any allergies and any health problems you have that could possibly affect you in getting your tattoo. They are obliged to keep these on record for a period of two years before disposing of it.
  • They should also use a sterile needle on every customer they are inking on, usually taken from an unopened package.
  • The tattooist should always wash their hands wear gloves and clean your skin before making any kind of incision.

The large majority of people who get tattoos are happy with the results, but sometimes, due to the negligence of the tattoo artist or tattoo parlour, the needle, as well as other things, can cause infection and result in that person needing a solicitor.

As well as the environment in which the tattooing is taking place, sources of potential infection could stem from un-sterilised needles, old ink pots, the tattooist’s bare hands (gloves should always be used), and the clients own skin, which should be cleaned before the tattooist begins.

Signs of infection after getting a tattoo are clear; redness and irritation from your tattoo should fade relatively soon after your visit to a tattoo artist. However, if your tattoo shows no signs of healing, it is a probable sign of infection. The same can be said for pain and swelling. If any of these symptoms do not clear up, then a doctor should be consulted immediately.

Other signs of infection include:

  • Fever
  • An unusual odour from the tattoo
  • Discharge from the tattoo
  • Red streaks
  • Sores
