Getting glammed up for Christmas

As we all know Christmas is the most popular time of the year for parties, with more and more of us visiting beauty salons and having more treatments than at any other time of the year. Unfortunately, this will also mean that our regular salons will have been booked up for Christmas since October - and unless we are one of the organised few that remembered to book in advance, we will find ourselves frantically searching for an alternative salon with a free spray tan appointment the weekend of our Christmas party.

This is a huge time of the year for these industries, but as clients we  need to be cautious. Each year, bogus salons pop up to cash in on the season, and more established hair and beauty salons may not take as much care as usual due to the pressure of trying to fit more clients into the same number of appointments.

Whether you are visiting a regular salon or trying a new salon for a last minute spray tan appointment, it is still extremely important that a patch test is carried out, otherwise it may be a Christmas to remember for all of the wrong reasons – you don’t want a terrible spray tan to mean you have to avoid all those Christmas parties altogether.

It is not worth risking a bad reaction because no patch test has been carried out for the sake of having that last minute treatment. If visiting a new salon or even a ‘pop up’ salon in a shopping centre, be sure to ask if you are not sure about anything. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as:

  • Will they be offering a patch test?
  • What are the beautician’s qualifications?
  • Have they carried out this treatment before?
  • Are they insured?

It is always worth asking these questions in the long run. You should also ensure that a full consultation is undertaken prior to having any treatment - this makes sure that the beautician treating you is aware of any allergies you have, or problems with past treatments.
